Tis the Season to Be Folly

Credit cards piled up next to a computer.

With the biggest holiday of the year just around the corner, so is the most dramatic increase in holiday cyberattacks. In 2019, Carbon Black reported a 57.5% increase in cybersecurity attacks. In 2020 we expect that hackers will continue to capitalize on the increased internet traffic that comes with online holiday shopping.

Given the demands of remote work, expect to see an even more dramatic increase in attacks. It is no secret that many companies are still struggling to find a solution to protect remote users and secure their systems. This places the users, and any systems/data they have access to at a much greater risk.

And hackers know just how to entrap our employees. With the rate of online shopping skyrocketing, our employees have never been more susceptible to attack through such avenues as spurious emails or websites offering unbelievable prices.

Whether it is stealing credit card information, stealing someone’s identity or launching a ransomware attack, threat actors are more incentivized than ever to attack any and every system.

Here are some suggestions our team of security experts put together to help keep your organization safe during the holidays:

Security Awareness Training

  • Beware of shopping-related phishing schemes.
  • Beware of visiting websites that you don’t know or trust.
  • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is

Endpoint Detection and Response

Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR) is a critical tool in combatting cybersecurity threats. The best EDR solutions are used to detect anomalous activity on endpoints (servers, workstations, laptops, and some mobile devices).

Remember when online shopping to not save sensitive info on the websites on your browser. Sensitive information would include your credit card or banking details. This makes it easier for hackers to obtain this information. Secure all accounts with strong passwords and use multifactor authentication when possible.  And our last tip is to not use free WiFi unless you are using a secure VPN.
