What is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of malicious software, or malware, designed to deny access to a computer system or data until a ransom is paid. Ransomware typically spreads through phishing emails or by unknowingly visiting an infected website.

Ransomware can be devastating to an individual or an organization. Anyone with important data stored on their computer or network is at risk, including government or law enforcement agencies and healthcare systems or other critical infrastructure entities.

Most recently a local government in Florence, Alabama was the victim of a cyber attack on their computer network system that cost the city nearly $300,000. The city is now paying the hackers in bitcoin that will come from the city’s insurance fund.

“We began taking every precaution we could possibly take, and then on June 5 it actually hit us,” Mayor Steve Holt said. “It appears they may have been in our system since early May – over a month going through our system.”This brings up a good point about Cyber Security Insurance.

What Can You Do to Ensure Your Business is Protected?

Basic measures such as firewall or antivirus do not leave you completely protected. Antivirus is simply good practice and should be considered the first step in your foundational security. It is not effective for stopping advanced security threats such as ransomware.
