Building Your Email List
Building your permission-based email list is one of the best ways to maximize your email marketing efforts. You don't want to miss the opportunity to communicate with your customers or members. Make sure you give them ample opportunity to join your list.
Make a habit of collecting emails to add to your list. Just remember that you are building a permission-based list, which means a person must give their permission before being added. Here are some tips for growing your list.
- Have a sign-up sheet available at your place of business
- Train employees to collect addresses and permission at every point of contact
- Collect addresses at trade shows and events
- Collect business cards of people who request information
Creating Your Email
Here are some easy tips that can help to increase your open and click-through rates.
- Take a look at your subject line. Is it short and to the point (e.g. between 30 and 40 characters, and no more than 5-8 words)? Does it incorporate a specific benefit?
- Consider your delivery day and/or time. You may want to try different days/times to see learn what is best for your particular audience.
- Evaluate your list. Consider the age of the list and the list quality - how were the names collected and how long ago?
- Create a sense of urgency. Limit the offer to a specific time period or a certain number of customers (e.g. first 50 customers).
- Review the messages within your email. Are you using simple words, short phrases, and paragraphs? Are you explaining a specific benefit that the recipient can relate to? Are the messages timely and relevant to the needs of the recipient?
